KALKAN SHOPPING - Holiday Villa in Turkey

Memik engraves by hand on beaten copperIf you like shopping, you will love Kalkan.  As the streets of the old town meander their way to the sea, you can shop for Turkish carpets, pottery, clothing, jewellery and a myriad of other things.  Kalkan has something for everyone from the upmarket traders in the old town to the town market, which takes place every Thursday.  Together the traditional old streets of Kalkan and the intricate shops will be hard to resist, even if only for a browse.

Some traditional crafts continue today, such as Memik who engraves beaten copper in the most intricate detail.  The potteries will craft bespoke items in Mediterranean colours. There are some lovely clothes shops, such as Vessila and Brako, who sell fashion items made from natural materials.  You can also purchase sea and surf clothing; shops offer well known brands such as Billabong.

Vessila & Brako, lovely clothes for the discerning visitorMany of the items for sale are hand made at very reasonable prices, however, there is still room for improvement and with a bit of bartering you can always get a better deal.

At the market you can buy anything; herbs & spices, textiles & clothing, fruit & vegetables and a great deal of other traditional Turkish food. It is worth a visit for the atmosphere and to hear the banter from the stallholders.

There are now a few supermarkets in Kalkan and if you buy enough, they will deliver you and your groceries back to your holiday villa in Turkey free of charge.

There are several travel shops, offering excursions to places of interest around the area.  There are also offices for car hire companies and an internet and telephone shop.  You can check your email or call home for reasonable rates.
