Holiday villas in Kalkan Turkey are well placed to allow you to enjoy lovely sight seeing trips and days out, and Patara Beach is only 21km from Kalkan - a 20 minute drive, or a ride on the local dolmus. The beach is stunning and makes an enjoyable visit with its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. Part of a national park, it is a key bio-diversity area, rich in birdlife and the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta). The turtles are nearing extinction and protection of their nesting sites on the Turkish coast is very important. The beach is closed after sunset (8pm) from May to October to give the turtles peace in which to lay their eggs; Patara is the second most important turtle nesting beach in Turkey.
The beach is a 12 kilometre-long strip of sand bordered at each end by mountains and backed by sand dunes. The large marshy area at the north end was once the harbour of Patara. Voted as one of the top beaches in the world by Times Online, Best of 2005 and known as the "widest beach of the northern Mediterranean". The beach is never crowded and is safe and peaceful with the absence of water sports. There is a beach cafe, showers, toilets and changing rooms, and you can hire sun loungers and umbrellas.
